Sauna Heater Information

The sauna heater is the core element of a traditional Finnish steam sauna, providing comforting heat and generating ample steam when water is poured onto the sauna rocks.

All of our sauna heaters can be used dry or for a traditional steam sauna experience. Simply pour a ladle of water every 3 to 5 minutes to produce steam and adjust the humidity to your preference.

Eucalyptus sauna oil can be diluted in the sauna water bucket to create a refreshing vaporised scent, which can help relieve cold and illness symptoms. Saunas offer several health benefits, including detoxification through sweating, increased blood flow to the skin surface for healthy skin and circulation, and a soothing sense of well-being, often resulting in more restful sleep.

It's crucial to choose the correct-sized sauna heater for your sauna room. To determine the appropriate size, calculate the cubic footage of your sauna room by multiplying its width, depth, and height in feet.

While shopping by cubic footage is effective for most sauna heater applications, outdoor saunas in cold climates may require a larger heater to compensate for the lower starting temperature.

Electric Sauna Heaters: These are the most convenient option, known for their fast warm-up times and accurate temperature control. They are popular in constant-use commercial facilities like gyms, athletic clubs, hotels, hospitals, and military bases.

For the best traditional sauna experience, we recommend Polar or Finnleo brand heaters, which have ample rock capacity for producing steam when water is added to the hot rocks. Small residential saunas, around 4' x 4', typically use a small electric sauna heater with around 3 kilowatts (3,000 watts). Large commercial saunas are best heated by floor-standing 3-phase electric heaters.

Most residential locations use 240v single-phase power, while commercial facilities often have 208v 3-phase power. If you're uncertain about your electrical power voltage and phase type, contact your power company or a licensed electrician before ordering a sauna heater.

Electric Sauna Heater Controls usually come in two types: built-in controls in the heater body or a separate wall-mounted control panel, usually placed on the outside wall of the sauna near the entrance door. Standard sauna controls typically feature two dials: one for a timer and the other for temperature control.

Digital sauna heater controls are gaining popularity for their reliability and pricing. They offer more precise temperature control, and some models even display the actual temperature. Digital controls can be programmed to turn on at specific times of the day.

Before installing your sauna heater, it's essential to study the installation manuals for your specific model. This will help you plan the proper electrical wiring and heater mounting location with wall supports behind the sauna paneling. For most saunas, wall-mounted heaters are suitable, while larger residential or commercial saunas may require floor-standing heaters. The main power wire hookup to the fuse panel should be done by a licensed electrician.

For wood-fired sauna stoves, they provide a more traditional sauna experience and can reach higher temperatures. However, they require more maintenance and cleaning. The quality of heat from a wood-fired sauna stove is unmatched, and they are ideal for remote locations or areas where wood-burning stoves are allowed by local building codes.

Wood-burning sauna heaters come with various features, including a water tank option for providing heated water for bathing. They can be installed with the chimney pipe either going straight up through the ceiling or out the back of the stove through the sauna's outside wall. Proper heat shielding may be required in tight clearances.

Heater Parts: Sauna heaters are generally easy to operate, but in case of malfunction, it's often a single damaged heating element that needs replacement. We have sauna heater replacement parts in stock for many brands, including Finnleo, Polar, Helo, Tylo, and more. Common replacement parts include heating elements, timers, thermostats, control face plates, high limit switches, and rocks. Deteriorating sauna rocks can lead to other parts failing.

Buyer beware of cheap imitation brand sauna heaters and infrared saunas. The sauna market is flooded with inexpensive imported sauna heaters that resemble quality, time-tested units. It's crucial to be aware of warranty information and the availability of replacement parts for these heaters. The brands offered by Sauna and Steam NZ have been in business for decades, and replacement parts are typically available for a reasonable lifespan, usually 20 to 30 years.
